Inappropriate Authorship

Good research starts with honest work.

More than we can admit, inappropriate authorship is becoming common. In some studies, named authors fall short of the standard authorship criteria: a name added for prestige or favour, or even a left off major contributor.

To aid in heightening everyone’s awareness on what to practice and watch out for, the UPD College of Architecture’s Office of the Research Program (CA ORP) introduces the Research Primer series. The series is composed of short practical guidance on good research practices drawn from internationally recognized standards such as the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE), the National Ethical Guidelines for Research Involving Human Participants (NEGRIHP) of the Philippine Health Research Ethics Board (PHREB), the Authorship Guidelines for Scientific Work of the University of the Philippines Manila’s Office of Research Integrity (UPM ORI), and other reputable sources.

This first primer is a firm reminder that, together, we shape a culture where research integrity comes naturally. Authorship must reflect genuine intellectual contribution: add value to the paper, not merely a name to the author list. No guests, no gifts, no ghosts.
